Two leaders of militant outfit ZUF apprehended in West Jaiñtia Hills district

Shillong, Aug 20: Two leaders of the Zeliangrong United Front (ZUF), were arrested by in West Jaiñtia Hills district.

The arrested ZUF leaders include chairman, Raitu Chawang (66) alias Raitu, and information secretary, Gengchung Pou Namthuiyang (43) alias Dangmei.

ZUF is a militant organization based in Nagaland and Manipur.

Acting on inputs that two cadres of ZUF were travelling from Silchar to Guwahati via Meghalaya’s Jaiñtia Hills , a team of special cell of West Jaiñtia Hills police put up a Naka at Phramer area.

During checking of a night super (AS01-JC-1300) on Monday at 2 AM, the two cadres were apprehended and seized from them four mobile phones.

West Jaiñtia Hills district SP, Vivek Syiem said that during preliminary inquiry, the two cadres admitted they are the ZUF cadres and they planned to go to go to Guwahati.

“The objective of their visit to Guwahati is being enquired,” Syiem said.

The ZUF is based in Nagaland and Manipur, and has its own military wing, the Zeliangrong Tiger Force which has its own chief.

Both the cadres were produced in a court of the Judicial Magistrate First Class in the district and they were given a judicial remand for 24 hours.

The duo is wanted for five cases under Arms Act in Tamenglong district of Manipur.

Syiem informed that the SP of Tamenglong district is sending a team to take custody of the two arrested ZUF leaders.
