Shillong, May 21: Deputy Chief Minister, Prestone Tynsong suggested that the SC/ST Committee of the State Assembly should take up the issue related the inclusion of other tribes in the Constitution (Schedule Tribe) Order 1950, while assuring that the state government would also taken up the matter.
Tynsong said that the State Assembly has a Committee on SC/ST and this committee can take up this issue.
“From the side of the government, we will also take up this issue,†Tynsong said, while admitting that he was not thorough with the matter, and he would take up the issue and discuss in the government.
Earlier, the Synjuk Ki Nongsynshar Shnong Nongthymmai Pyllun met Chief Minister, Conrad K Sangma and demanded from the government to amend the Constitution (Schedule Tribe) Order 1950 to ensure deletion of other tribes from the ST list.
The Khun Hynñiewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM) has also asked the state government to take up the matter seriously and not to wait for agitations.
The KHNAM Youth Wing also quoted a circular issued on May 2, 1975 by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) to all states and union territories which states, that “a person who migrates from one state to another, can claim to be an SC or ST only in relation to the state to which he originally belonged, and not in respect of the state to which he has migrated.â€
The KHNAM alleged that only Meghalaya is yet to comply with this circular issued by the Central government.
