Shillong, Dec 18: The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) has decided to meet Governor R N Ravi soon to inform him that the alliance is in the majority in the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC).

Following the decision of Independent MDC from Nongshken, Grace Mary Kharpuri to support the alliance, the strength of the UDA has increased to 16 members in the House, which presently has 29 members.

The United Democratic Front (UDF) now has 13 members including the KHADC chairman, P. N Syiem.

Kharpuri was welcomed by UDA chairman and former chief executive member, Teiñwell Dkhar during a meeting on Wednesday.

“We have decided to soon meet the Governor and also the state government to apprise them that the UDA is in the majority in the Council. The strength of the alliance has gone up to 16 members after the support of Kharpuri,” Dkhar told reporters.

Earlier, Congress MDC from Mairang-Nongkhlaw, Batskhem Ryntathiang has also extended his support to the UDA.

Dkhar expressed confidence that the UDA will form the new executive committee in the KHADC.

On the other hand, Kharpuri said that her decision to support the UDA was on the ground that the UDF has lost its majority in the Council.

She also expressed concern over the political tussle which has to a great extent affected the smooth functioning of the Council.
