Shillong, Aug 2: The United Democratic Party (UDP) will discuss the issue related to final draft of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) released in Assam in its central executive committee meeting to be held on August 7.

This was informed by the UDP state youth wing president, and former Mawlai MLA, Embhahlang Syiemlieh after leading a delegation to Deputy Chief Minister, Prestone Tynsong on Thursday.

The UDP delegation sought Tynsong’s intervention on the need to strengthen infiltration check points in the state.

Syiemlieh told reporters that there is also a need to conduct a similar NRC exercise in Meghalaya to segregate genuine and non-genuine citizens in the state as demanded by the KSU.

“However, the matter will be thoroughly discussed at the Central Executive Committee meeting of the party,” he said.

The UDP state youth wing in its memorandum submitted to Tynsong urged the government to consider putting in place temporary mechanisms to check infiltration in view of the apprehension that over 40 lakh people who did not find their names in NRC list may try to enter into the state.

The UDP also stressed the need to equip all infiltration check points with internet connectivity to facilitate speedy checking while also urging the government to consider deputing magistrates at the infiltration check points.

It also asked the government to fast track the process of land acquisition for setting up of required infrastructure at the proposed entry and exit points.

“The authorities should also be instructed to double check identities relating to NRC,” he said while urging the government to fast track the functioning of the Directorate of Infiltration to address and contain influx problem.

Meanwhile, Syiemlieh informed that the deputy chief minister has assured to take up the matter with the state government for necessary action.
