Shillong, March 16: Various NGOs in Meghalaya today reiterated their decision to oppose uranium mining during a meeting with officials of the Uranium Corporation of India Limited (UCIL) held in Shillong.
The meeting was convened by UCIL at Hotel Pinewood where seven NGOs – North East Students Organisation (NESO), Khasi Students Union (KSU), Hynñiewtrep Youth Council (HYC), Meghalaya People’s Human Rights Council (MPHRC), besides representatives of North East Development Forum (NEDF) and Langrin Youth Welfare Association.
Talking to media persons after the meeting, MPHRC leader, Dino G. Dympep said that all the NGOs would continue to oppose uranium mining.
The NGOs,under one voice conveyed to UCIL that they would oppose the proposed mining of uranium as it posed health hazard.
They said that even the State Government has expressed its stand against uranium mining region from Kylleng-Pyndeng-Sohiong-Mawthabah.
