Shillong, Apr 25: Urban Affairs Minister, Hamletson Dohling will lead a study team from the state to Kerala next week to get first hand information on waste management programme being implemented in Alappuzha city there.
Alappuzha (or Alleppey), the district headquarters of Alappuzha district, is located on the Laccadive Sea in the southern state. Alappuzha is a city and also a municipality in Kerala with an urban population of 174,164, and third among the districts having the highest literacy rate in Kerala.
In 2016, the Centre for Science and Environment rated Alappuzha as the top cleanest town in India followed by Mysuru and Panaji.
According to Dohling the visit to Alappuzha is to study the technique of waste management being adopted there.
“We will interact with them and see if techniques adopted there can be also replicated here (Shillong),†Dohling said.
Expressing concern over the indiscriminate throwing of waste in Shillong city and other places, Dohling said that Shillong should become a clean city especially with the state hosting the National Games in 2022.
