Shillong, Sept 8: The University of Science and Technology, Meghalaya (USTM) on Saturday held its fourth Convocation and altogether, 1,094 graduates were awarded degrees on the occasion in the presence of a host of dignitaries including Meghalaya Chief Minister, Conrad K. Sangma.
Eight scholars were honoured with PhD degrees, 823 students were offered Post Graduate degrees and 263 of them received undergraduate degrees.
The University also rewarded the Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Best Post Graduate Award to Pallav Bora from the Department of Mathematics and the PA Sangma Best Undergraduate Award was given to Dikshita Deka from the Department of Applied Biology.
Speaking on the occasion, the Chief Minister said that the state government would come up with its education policy within this month, and one of the areas of stress has been higher and technical education.
He congratulated all the students who have been awarded degrees and said that what differentiates USTM from any private or Central university was the human touch which is absent in other institutes and rated USTM as one of the best institutions in the entire North-eastern region.
He urged the graduating students to continue with this human touch and be passionate about whatever they do.
The Chief Minister lauded USTM’s efforts to further grow as a world class institution and promised to extend all support to the University and be a partner in the growth story of the state and the region.
Earlier, in his welcome address, the Chancellor of USTM, M. Hoque said that the University aspired to become a world class university and appealed to all stakeholders to join hands in the endeavor to transform the university into a world class institution and participate in the nation-building process.
Hoque has also expressed his gratefulness to the Government of Meghalaya for the creation of USTM.
Prof SK Srivastava, Vice Chancellor, NEHU urged the students to remember the contribution of their parents, teachers and the society towards them so that they can pay back to the society.
In his Convocation address, Dr RC Deka, Former Director, AIIMS said that life itself is the biggest university.
Twenty two gold medals were awarded to the best Post Graduates of the respective departments while 10 gold medals were given away to ten best undergraduate students from different departments.
