Shillong Jan 29: Vice-Chairman of the State Government Program Implementation and Monitoring Committee (SGPI&MC), Vijay Raj has quit the post following protest by the Khasi Students Union demanding his immediate removal.
The KSU also demanded the removal of Pawan Sharma who was appointed to the post of Vice Chairman of the Meghalaya Commission on Resource Mobilisation.
“I the undersigned would like to lay the following for your information and necessary action. I was appointed as the Vice-Chairman of the State Government Program Implementation and Monitoring Committee. It seems that my appointment as the Vice-Chairman is being opposed by some NGOs stating that I was the President of Non-Tribal Youth Union (NTYU). But inspite of my clarification that I never was the President of NTYU, the NGOs has been continuing their opposition against my appointment which in my opinion is hampering the State function,†Raj said in his resignation letter submitted Chief Minister, Conrad K. Sangma on Wednesday.
“So, for the reason stated herein above, I hereby submit my resignation from the said post as I do not want the State to suffer for the interest of which, I have been working till date. Inspite of this resignation, I will still continue to work for the betterment of the State,†Raj said.
Earlier during the day, the KSU while holding a public meeting to oppose the Citizenship Amendment Bill at Motphran here, burnt the effigies of Raj and Sharma in protest against their appointment.
