Shillong, Feb 27: The Voice of the People Party (VPP) member of the District Council (MDC) from Laitkroh Lyngkyrdem, Shemborlang Rynjah, will take over as the new Chief Executive Member (CEM) of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) after the MDCs in the opposition did not file their nomination papers for the post.

Similarly, VPP MDC from Mawkhar-Pynthorumkhrah, Strong Pillar Kharjana, is ready to uncontestedly take over as Chairman of KHADC.

The VPP, which has 17 MDCs, is now preparing to lead the KHADC’s Executive Committee independently.

Rynjah and Kharjana have filed their nomination papers for the CEM and Chairman elections immediately after the swearing-in ceremony of all the new MDCs on Thursday.

“After examining all the documents, it was found that all the papers were complete and they have been accepted. As no one (from the opposition) came out to contest, these two candidates were elected without any contest,” said KHADC Secretary B Sohtun.

The election for the new CEM will be held on Friday at 2 pm after the election for the Chairman at 11 pm.

It may be mentioned that the VPP has named Kynjohlang Rangtong MDC from Mawhati as the Vice-Chairman.

The VPP will have a small Executive Committee of ten members which will include the Chairman, Vice-Chairman, and eight Executive Members.

Meanwhile, all the 29 MDC took oath which was administered by East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner, RM Kurbah.

Sohra MDC, Titosstarwell Chyne took his oath in Khasi while the rest in English.
