Waive educational fees, HYC tells Govt

Shillong, Apr 20: The education cell of the Hynñiewtrep Youth Council (HYC) has asked the state government to direct all institutions to waive educational fees during the nationwide lockdown to combat COVID-19.

In his letter to the education minister Lahkmen Rymbui on Monday, secretary of the HYC education cell, Enlang Sawian said many parents have expressed concern regarding the ability to pay their children educational fees.

In view of this, Sawian suggested that the department should issue direction to all schools and colleges to waive the fees for the period of the lockdown.

“Direction may be given to the schools and college/universities that payment of fees for the upcoming months after the relaxation of the lockdown period may be relaxed and extended for a considerable period,” he said.

He also urged the department to ensure no institutions may be allowed to hike or demand any additional fees from the students on the pretext of providing online classes or activities during the lockdown period.

Meanwhile, Sawian also asked the department to see that all institutions should make sure that payment of salaries to all teaching and non-teaching staffs are made in time during the lockdown period.
