The white paper on traffic congestion came up, out of the brainstorming session held at the IIM Shillong on October 5 and December 19. The white paper was submitted to Deputy Chief Minister, Prestone Tynsong by a delegation which comprised of former Home Minister, R G Lyngdoh, former Ambassador of India to Colombia, Rudi Warjri, former Director General of Police, W.R. Marbaniang, former Director General of Police, B.R. Rana, Prof Amena Passah and journalist, Raymond Kharmujai.

The brainstorming session was taken part by representatives of various Government departments, public transport associations and eminent citizens who deliberated on various aspects of the burgeoning traffic congestion in Shillong and came up with a set of recommendations aiming at addressing the issue.

Stating that the recommendations are both for long and short term solutions, the Centre said that improvement of traffic congestion started by touching upon essential policy frame work of the Government relating to public transport and its allied issues such as road capacity expansion, parking facility enhancement.

The Centre would participate and contribute to the Government efforts to improve the traffic situation in Shillong city, if the need arises for providing more clarity to the recommendations and approaches.
