Shillong, Mar 2: Eleven-year-old Shelevah N. Jyrwa from Laimer, Upper Shillong, was crowned champion of Sur Kynud Season 4 at the grand finale held on Thursday evening at the Don Bosco Youth Centre Shillong in Laitumkhrah.
The musical talent competition, organised by Don Bosco Media Network Television (DBMNTV), concluded with eight finalists competing for the top prize of ₹1 lakh.
The event was attended by East Shillong MLA M. Ampareen Lyngdoh, Fr. Fidel Orendain, General Councillor from Rome, Fr. John Zosiama, Provincial of the Shillong Province, along with priests from South Asia, religious leaders, and families of the participants.
Organised under the leadership of Fr. Michael Makri, Director of DBMNTV, the competition has, since its inception, focused on nurturing young musical talent through structured coaching and mentoring. Specially appointed coaches, including Miss Lapdiang and Miss Kheiñkor, provided systematic training to participants in preparation for the finale.
Addressing the gathering, Dr. Lyngdoh praised the initiative, noting that programmes undertaken by the Salesians consistently uphold high standards in youth development. She commended the Don Bosco Youth Centre for creating a meaningful platform that enables young people to showcase their talents.
“It is through such competitions, whether in music or sports, that young people learn to work hard and strive toward their goals,” she said.
In his remarks, Fr. Michael Makri credited the success of the programme to the support of religious superiors, donors—including the state government—and well-wishers. He also acknowledged the dedication of parents who supported their children throughout the competition.
During the ceremony, the Cecilia Memorial Award was presented to Br. Sniawshngain Papang, while the DBMNTV Youth Icon Award 2025 was conferred on Shri Herbert Kharkongor, Superintendent of Police, West Khasi Hills. Mementos were also distributed to the panel of judges.
As in previous editions, winners of the competition will not only receive cash prizes of up to ₹1 lakh but will also be provided opportunities to participate in major national and international competitions, further broadening their exposure in the field of music.
