Tura, April: In a notable political development, the Voice of the People Party (VPP) has officially made its entry into Garo Hills, a region long considered a stronghold of the National People’s Party (NPP), founded by the late Purno A. Sangma.

For years, the NPP has remained a dominant political force in the region and has been leading the government in Meghalaya for over eight years under Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma. However, the emergence of the VPP—a relatively new political party led by Nongkrem MLA Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit—is beginning to reshape the state’s political landscape. The party currently has four elected representatives.

Marking its first major step into Garo Hills, the VPP held a meeting in Tura, establishing its maiden organisational presence in the region since its formation. The move is part of the party’s broader strategy to expand beyond its base in Khasi-Jaintia Hills and build a statewide footprint.

During the visit, Basaiawmoit interacted with local residents and community members to understand the issues and concerns affecting the people of Garo Hills, along with broader state-level matters. Addressing supporters, party leaders highlighted key priorities such as transparent governance, grassroots participation, and community-driven development.

The meeting also aimed to strengthen ties with the people of the region and gain deeper insights into local aspirations.

The development comes at a crucial time, with political activity in Garo Hills intensifying ahead of the upcoming Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) elections, which are witnessing shifting dynamics and increased competition.

Political observers believe that the VPP’s entry into Garo Hills could significantly influence the evolving political scenario, as the party seeks to position itself as a statewide force rather than one confined to specific regions.

Addressing the gathering, Basaiawmoit emphasized the importance of inclusive development, clean governance, and active public participation, reiterating the party’s commitment to addressing local challenges through close engagement with the people.

In a significant organisational move, the VPP also constituted an Adhoc Committee in Tura—its first formal structure in Garo Hills—signaling a strategic push to strengthen its grassroots presence.

The party is expected to continue its outreach programmes across Garo Hills in the coming days as it works to consolidate support and expand its influence in the region.
