Shillong, Nov 20: To promote drug-less system of medicine to prevent diseases by altering the diet and lifestyle, the 1st Naturopathy Day was observed at Civil Hospital Shillong on Tuesday.
Secretary Health and Family Welfare and Director of AYUSH, Pravin Bakshi, was the Chief Guest at the programme organised by the Yoga and Naturopathy Department of Civil Hospital.
Speaking on the occasion, Bakshi said that Naturopathy has stuck its roots all over the world as it is a form of treatment which is a non-evasive and with no side-effects.
Stating that since time immemorial people have been using natural resources to heal sicknesses, Bakshi said, “we need balance to maintain a sense of wellness, which is supported through Naturopathy.â€
Reiterating Government’s commitment to spread AYUSH, Bakshi said that the State is fortunate to have a full fledged Directorate of AYUSH adding that the endeavours of the government are on to equip the Directorate with more trained manpower and facilities.
Drawing from Meghalaya’s wealth of traditional medicine, he was of opinion that Meghalaya should blend Naturopathy with the tourism industry in line with states like Kerala.
Delivering the keynote address, Dr. (Mrs.) L Papiah, Yoga and Naturopathy Physician, Civil Hospital Shillong spoke at length about the origins and benefits of Naturopathy. She also referred to the role played by Mahatma Gandhi, who is known as India’s Father of Naturopathy, in advocating the cause of Naturopathy in the country.
