SHILLONG, APR 15: BJP Mahila Morcha state president Arena Hynniewta on Wednesday hailed the Centre’s decision on 33 percent reservation for women in governance, calling it a historic step that will transform society.
Issuing a statement after a public rally organized at Nongpoh by young women and mothers of Ri-Bhoi district, Hynniewta said the event was held to carry an important message to every village, locality, and district across Meghalaya.
“The aim is to make women aware of the honor and recognition being given to them, and how this will bring positive transformation in the progress and development of society,” she said.
Referring to the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam, Hynniewta noted that the legislation enables greater representation for women in lawmaking bodies.
“The 33% reservation for women in governance is a historic step, enabling women to take part as lawmakers and representatives in various platforms such as Members of Parliament (MP), Members of Legislative Assembly (MLA), and Members of District Council (MDC),” she said.
“This initiative encourages women to work together, strengthen unity, and bring meaningful change.”
She further emphasized that women’s participation in leadership would help address key challenges faced by the youth.
“Women’s participation in leadership will also help address many challenges faced by young people, especially in education, employment, and opportunities. When women are empowered with authority, they can better protect and guide the younger generation,” Hynniewta stated.
Expressing gratitude to the Union Government, the BJP Mahila Morcha president said, “I extend my heartfelt gratitude to the present government for its commitment and for introducing this significant law for women. Women are no longer confined to traditional roles; they are now empowered to stand up for their rights and serve as responsible citizens of the nation.”
Hynniewta also thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his leadership on the issue.
“I also express my sincere thanks to our Hon’ble Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi ji, for his vision and understanding of the responsibilities and aspirations of women,” she added.
