Shillong, Aug 3: Hynñiewtrep Youth Council activists on Friday left security personnel red face as they managed to storm into the premises of the Meghalaya secretariat along with placards and shouted slogans there demanding that National Register of Citizens (NRC) update should be carried out in the state besides implementation of inner line permit (ILP).

The HYC members assembled in the premises of the main secretariat along with placards, while security personnel who were caught unaware watched the protesters with astonishment.

To keep the security personnel who were manning the main gate off guard, the HYC members entered the secretariat premises as normal visitors one after another.

Later the activists managed to gather in large number and shouted slogans demanding NRC exercise be conducted and ILP should be implemented in the state.

The protestors were later chased out by police and warned of arresting them if they continue their protest.

The protesters then assembled at the parking lot near Additional Secretariat.

No Ministers were present in the secretariat when the incident happened.

This is the second incident where protesters had entered the Secretariat premises despite the presence of security personnel.

East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police, Davis NR Marak said that there was no information about the coming of the protesters to the main secretariat which was a breach of security.

“We got the information only after these people have congregated. The protesters gradually were entering the secretariat premises like normal visitors one after another and they did not come in a group,” the SP he said.

HYC general secretary, Roy Kupar Synrem said that such anger should be shown in order to wake up any “sleeping government” and consider seriously the demands for introduction of ILP and conduct of NRC to detect illegal immigrants in the state.

On the move of the Meghalaya government to set up of entry and exit points to check influx, Synrem said that that such a mechanism will not prevent illegal Bangladeshi immigrants from entering into the state because at entry points, the authorities will only ask them to show some documents including EPIC (electoral photo identity card).

“We have seen in Assam that those 40 lakh plus persons did not figure their names in NRC, but they EPIC. What will happen if those 40 lakh plus persons who have been left out of the NRC list move out of Assam and settle in Meghalaya by showing their EPIC,” Synrem asked.

He also said that the Citizenship Amendment Bill, 2016 if passed by Parliament, most Hindu Bangladeshis will also seek refuge in India, and this is a threat to the indigenous people of Meghalaya.

Symrem said that to address influx problem, ILP is the only mechanism that can curb the problem.
