Advocate Hamarsan Sing Thangkhiew’s name recommended as judge of Meghalaya High Court

Shillong, Sept 27: Senior advocate in the state, Hamarsan Sing Thangkhiew has been recommended as judge of the Meghalaya High Court by the Supreme Court Collegium.

The Collegium which comprised of Chief Justice of India, Dipak Misra and Justices Ranjan Gogoi and Madan B Lokur made the recommendation on September 25.

“The above recommendation has been made by then Chief Justice of Meghalaya High Court on February 26, 2018 in consultation with his sole colleague. The government of Meghalaya has also conveyed their no objection to the proposal,” the Collegium noted.

It also said that at present, there is no judge in the Supreme Court conversant with the affairs of the Meghalaya High Court to ascertain suitability of Thangkhiew for elevation.

“For the purpose of assessing merit and suitability of Thangkhiew for elevation to the High Court, we have carefully scrutinised the material placed in the file. Apart from this, we have had interaction with Thangkhiew. On the basis of interaction and having regard to all relevant factors, the Collegium is of the considered view that Thangkhiew, Advocate, is suitable for being appointed as Judge of the Meghalaya High Court. The Collegium, therefore, resolves to recommend that Thangkhiew, Advocate, be appointed as Judge of the Meghalaya High Court,” the Collegium said.
