Shillong, Feb 1: Meghalaya Chief Minister, Conrad K Sangma who led a delegation of political leaders from the North East met several leaders of the BJP-led NDA allies in Delhi on Friday and sought their support to the demand of people from the North Eastern states against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016.
Sangma, who is the president of the National People’s Party (NPP), led the delegation of senior political leaders and held meetings with Union Minister and Lok Janshakti Party leader, Ram Vilas Paswan, Shiv Sena leader, Sanjay Raut and Shiromani Akali Dal, and Janata Dal-United.
Meghalaya Assembly Speaker, Donkupar Roy, Deputy Chief Minister, Prestone Tynsong, Asom Gana Parishad leader, Atul Bora were among those who accompanied the Chief Minister.
“We have met some of the leaders of the NDA. We explained to them that how the Bill will endanger the lives and identity of the indigenous communities and the ongoing loud protest against the Bill by various civil society groups and political parties against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill,†he said, adding that they have assured that their members in the Rajya Sabha would vote against the Bill.
On Tuesday, eleven non-Congress and non-BJP parties from across the North Eastern states met at Guwahati and decided to appeal to the NDA government to scrap the Bill which was already passed in the Lok Sabha on January 8.
