Shillong Feb 9: Meghalaya Chief Minister, Conrad K Sangma was unanimously re-elected as national president of the National People’s Party (NPP).

This is the second time that Conrad was re-elected as the NPP national president after he was tasked with the responsibility following the death of his father and former Lok Sabha Speaker, Purno Agitok Sangma in March 2016.

Conrad was re-elected to the post at the national general body meeting of the NPP at the State Convention Centre in Shillong on Saturday which was attended by party leaders and legislators from various states of the country.

The meeting also resolved to snap ties with the BJP-led NDA if the Citizenship Amendment Bill is passed in Rajya Sabha.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Conrad thanked the party for re-electing him as the party national president.

Conrad said that the meeting has passed a resolution to be sent to the Central government not to go ahead with the bill in Rajya Sabha, adding that if the Bill is passed in the Rajya Sabha, the national general body meeting decided that the NPP would break its ties with the NDA.

The NPP which has 20 MLAs in Meghalaya is leading the government in state and two MLAs of the BJP are also part of the government.

The four MLAs of the NPP also formed the government together with the BJP in Manipur.

Conrad also announced that the NPP has decided to gear up preparations to contest the upcoming Lok Sabha elections in all 25 Lok Sabha seats in the North East as well as the Assembly polls in Arunachal Pradesh.

“We are keen to contest all the Lok Sabha seats in the North East and we will work out how to go forward. The election committee will work towards how to organise to be able to contest in all the seats. In Assam and Mizoram the committee has been form to conduct the election of party president in these two states. On February 17, the party unit in Assam will inaugurated including party office at Guwahati,” the NPP national president informed.
