Shillong, June 23: The Meghalaya government has decided not to allow hawkers and street vendors to resume their livelihood activities besides re-opening of driving schools in the state.

Health Minister AL Hek told reporters that the issues were discussed during the review meeting chaired by the deputy chief minister Prestone Tynsong on Tuesday.

“We have decided not to allow hawkers and street vendors to re-start their activities (due to the prevailing situation arisng out of the COVID-19 pandemic in the state),” he said.

Hek however informed that the government has directed the chief secretary M S Rao to hold meeting with the urban affairs department for resolving the issue related to hawkers.

Earlier last week, a delegation of hawkers and street vendors had requested the state government’s intervention for resumption of their livelihood activities, which have been affected due to national lockdown for past three months.

Meanwhile, the minister informed that after discussion, the meeting has also decided not to allow re-opening of driving schools in the state.

According to him, relaxation will only be given after proper assessment of the situation.
