Shillong, September 5, 2025 – Shillong joined the rest of the nation in observing Teacher’s Day, an occasion to honor educators for their invaluable role in shaping society. This year’s celebrations across the city were marked by heartfelt tributes, reflections on the meaning of teaching, and special recognition for long years of service.
Celebrations Across Schools
Students across Shillong celebrated the day with cultural performances, poems, role-play activities, and tokens of appreciation for their teachers. Schools emphasized that teachers are not only knowledge-givers but also mentors who inspire creativity, discipline, and compassion.
The media, too, extended greetings to the teaching fraternity, acknowledging their indispensable contribution to nation-building through education.
The Story of Teacher’s Day
Teacher’s Day in India is observed on September 5 to mark the birth anniversary of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, a distinguished teacher, philosopher, and the second President of India. When he assumed the Presidency in 1962, Dr. Radhakrishnan humbly requested that his birthday be celebrated as Teacher’s Day, in honor of educators everywhere. Since then, the day has stood as a tribute not only to him but to all teachers who dedicate their lives to guiding generations of learners.
As Margaret Kshiar reflects: “A teacher is like a candle—it consumes itself to light the way for others.” Teacher’s Day thus reminds society of the responsibility teachers carry—not only to impart academic knowledge but also to nurture honesty, empathy, and values in young minds.
Honoring 25 Years of Service at KJP Girls’ Higher Secondary School
A highlight of this year’s celebrations was the felicitation program at KJP Girls Higher Secondary School, Shillong, held at Dorbar Hall, Mission Compound. Three senior teachers – Miss Minniefer Syiemlieh, Miss Merrylinda Rorine Syiem, and Miss Darisha Riwan – were honored for completing 25 years of dedicated service. Two office staff members who also reached the milestone were recognized.

The school presented them with mementos inscribed with words of gratitude, symbolizing appreciation for their tireless commitment. Speaking on the occasion, the teachers shared that while teaching can be challenging, it is a profoundly fulfilling journey, enriched by the joy of shaping young lives into responsible citizens.

Teacher’s Day 2025 in Shillong was not just a celebration, but a reminder of the sacred role teachers play in nurturing future generations.
