Shillong, September 12, 2025 –
The long-standing demand for the relocation of the temporary CRPF camp at Mawlai may soon be addressed, as the Meghalaya government announced that 50 acres of land have been earmarked for the construction of a State Security Complex at New Shillong.
Raising the issue on the final day of the Autumn Session, Mawlai MLA Brightstarwell Marbaniang reiterated that the presence of the camp has been a source of disturbance and inconvenience to local residents. He pressed the government to expedite the relocation process, stating that the demand has been pending for several years.
Replying to the query, Home Minister Prestone Tynsong assured the House that steps are already underway.
“We have identified 50 acres of land for the State Security Complex where the CRPF camp will be shifted. Some preliminary works have already begun,” Tynsong said.
He further clarified that the role of the CRPF should be viewed as supportive, aimed at assisting the state in maintaining law and order, and not as a threat to local communities.
“People must understand that CRPF deployment is not the same as that of the Border Security Force (BSF) or other central armed forces. Their presence is meant to ensure peace, not to undermine local rights,” the minister stressed.
Marbaniang welcomed the assurance but urged the government to engage with the public to build trust and address lingering concerns about the relocation process.
