Shillong, October 10: The Hill Farmers’ Union (HFU) has strongly condemned the online abuse directed at Meghalaya’s marathon legend Kmoin Wahlang and has called for immediate government action against those responsible.
A delegation led by HFU General Secretary Allfondbirth Kharsyntiew met East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem to demand strict legal measures against the social media user identified as “twisted_koala”, who posted demeaning and dehumanizing comments about Wahlang.
Kharsyntiew stated that the remarks were not only a personal attack but also an insult to the heritage, values, and resilience of Meghalaya and the Northeast region.
“The offensive comments against Kmoin Wahlang attack not just her, but the spirit of our indigenous communities. Such hate speech must not be tolerated,”
said Kharsyntiew.
Kmoin Wahlang, 76, a mother of twelve and grandmother to fifty-four, is celebrated as a symbol of perseverance, fitness, and cultural pride. An active HFU member from Sngimawlein Circle, South West Khasi Hills, she serves as the Union’s Ambassador, inspiring youth across rural farming communities through her remarkable achievements and resilience.
The HFU has demanded:
A public apology from the individual responsible.
Strict legal and cyber action under the IT Act and relevant laws protecting elders and indigenous communities.
Safeguards against online abuse targeting icons and senior citizens from marginalized regions.
Recognition of Kmoin Wahlang’s contributions through state-supported platforms and honors.
Kharsyntiew emphasized that the attack on Wahlang represents a collective affront to the pride and identity of Northeast Indians, urging civil society, media, and government authorities to defend regional icons and prevent the normalization of hate speech in digital spaces.
