Nongpoh | November 13, 2025: Five MLAs from Ri Bhoi District joined the closing ceremony of the Golden Jubilee celebrations of the Ri Bhoi District Sports Association (RBDSA), expressing strong support for the remarks made by Umsning MLA, Dr. Celestine Lyngdoh.
Dr. Lyngdoh highlighted that while Ri Bhoi has produced many talented sportspersons who excel in both indoor and outdoor games, the district still lacks adequate sports infrastructure. He emphasized that the government must prioritize the construction of quality playgrounds and sporting facilities, stating that “it is wise to plant seeds where they are sure to bear fruit,” referring to the potential of local athletes.
The observation resonated with the MLAs present, who agreed that Ri Bhoi’s youth have great sporting talent but continue to face challenges due to the poor condition of playing fields and limited infrastructure.
Responding to these concerns, Sports and Youth Affairs Minister, Bah Wailadmiki Shylla, informed that several major projects have already been sanctioned for the district, though many are still under various stages of implementation. These include:
Mawhati Ground: ₹1.11 crore
Byrnihat Ground: ₹1.60 crore
Umbuda Stadium: ₹10.93 crore (nearing completion)
Umtrew Umnsning Ground: ₹3.24 crore
Chinchona Pahamsyiem Complex: ₹14.29 crore
Nongsder Ground: ₹10.01 crore
He added that while the government has not neglected Ri Bhoi, the public must remain patient as these large-scale projects are completed, which will eventually provide significant benefits for the district’s athletes.
Minister Shylla further noted the existence of a sports quota for talented players who earn recognition at various competitive levels, allowing them opportunities for government employment. He encouraged young sportspersons to continue working hard, as sporting excellence could also open pathways to careers in public service.
The event, marking 50 years of RBDSA’s commitment to promoting sports in Ri Bhoi, served as a platform to renew collective efforts toward developing better facilities and opportunities for the district’s youth.
