Shillong, December 19: Umsawwar village, under Mawkynrew Block in East Khasi Hills district, continues to draw visitors for its rich natural beauty and well-preserved traditional way of life. Known for its clean and crystal-clear streams, diverse flora and fauna, and scenic public spaces, the village has emerged as a destination of cultural as well as ecological significance.

Among the prominent water bodies in the area are the Synrang Diengkhiat Stream and Weilur Stream, both of which flow into the Umngot River. The village is also home to several trekking routes, picnic and resting spots, and community-managed forests that play a key role in sustaining its traditional lifestyle. Umsawwar is a large settlement, and exploring its hills, valleys, forests, and streams can take nearly two days. From various vantage points, visitors can view the hills of the War Jaintia region, including areas such as Jariañ and Amlarem. The Umngot River lies about a 30-minute walk from the village and surrounds much of the settlement.

Agriculture remains the main occupation of the villagers, with residents cultivating strawberries, paddy, and a range of seasonal vegetables. Alongside farming, Umsawwar is notable for the continued practice of traditional folk music, especially among the elders. Villagers often gather in open spaces to exchange stories and pass on ancestral knowledge through songs accompanied by instruments such as the mandolin, violin, and other traditional musical tools.

Music is also an integral part of daily life, with songs commonly sung while working in fields and on hillsides. Villagers say these practices reflect their commitment to preserving customs and traditions inherited from their ancestors.

The younger generation has embraced these teachings while also seeking to adapt traditional music to contemporary forms. This has led to the formation of a local folk group, Sur Pynbiang Pynthiang, which performs publicly, particularly after sowing and harvesting seasons. The group often performs on hills and along riverbanks, using drums and other percussion instruments to create melodies that bring the community together in celebration.

As Christmas approaches, villagers are currently engaged in singing songs dedicated to nature as well as Christmas carols in preparation for the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ. Men, women, children, and elders alike participate in these gatherings across hillsides, riverbanks, and rocky outcrops, expressing collective joy through music.

Speaking to the correspondent, local youth D. Suting said the participation of both young people and elders in singing Christmas songs reflects unity within the village and serves as a meaningful way to preserve the cultural heritage and traditions of Umsawwar.
