Shillong, Feb 6: The Khasi Jaintia Ïewduh Fish Association (KJIFA) on Thursday said it has no information regarding any official order banning the import of fish from Bangladesh into Meghalaya, calling the reported decision unacceptable.
KJIFA Secretary Bah D. Marbaniang stated that the association has not received any formal order or public notification from any government department in this regard.
“We have not received any official order or notification from the government regarding the ban on fish from Bangladesh,” Marbaniang said, adding that any such decision should be officially communicated to stakeholders.
He further clarified that the fish sold at Ïewduh market are safe for consumption and pose no threat to public health, as they have already been tested by the Food Safety Department.
Marbaniang also said that, at present, no fish is being brought from Bangladesh to Ïewduh. According to him, most of the fish sold in the market are sourced from Assam and Kolkata, and fish from Bangladesh is generally not sold at the Ïewduh market.
He, however, acknowledged that fish from Bangladesh may be reaching certain rural areas through informal channels, depending on local distribution practices.
Highlighting the scale of supply, Marbaniang said that up to 10 tonnes of fish can reach villages, smaller markets, and Shillong city collectively in a single day.
The KJIFA urged the authorities to ensure clarity and proper communication before implementing any restrictions that could affect traders and consumers alike.
