SHILLONG, MAR 4: BJP legislator AL Hek on Wednesday reiterated that Meghalaya’s reservation policy should prioritise families living below the poverty line (BPL) and those without any government employees.
“I am repeating what I raised in the Assembly… if they review reservation, they must ensure it covers BPL families, especially those where not a single member has a government job,” Hek told reporters.
He further stated that once such provisions are ensured, he has no objection to the existing structure. “After that, whether it’s 40-40-20, I have no problem. I will stand by my point — reservation should go to poor families who’ve never got jobs. The government should provide them special reservation.”
Hek admitted that he had not seen the expert committee’s report and that he missed the recent Assembly debate on the issue due to health reasons.
“…if they consider this point — give special reservation so these families too can get government jobs,” he added.
