SHILLONG, MAR 25: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Wednesday indicated that the state government will examine the demand for instituting an inquiry into the recent unrest in Garo Hills, which erupted over protests against non-tribal participation in the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) polls.

Responding to queries, Sangma said the nature of the incidents and the situation that unfolded necessitate a detailed investigation to ascertain the causes and identify those involved, particularly in cases where violence led to damage of public and private property.

He noted that Leader of Opposition Mukul Sangma had earlier written to him seeking a probe into the matter.

“The kind of incidents that happened and the situation that unfolded does require some kind of investigation as to what led to the circumstances and who were involved, especially in areas where violence took place and properties were damaged,” the Chief Minister said.

However, he added that the government is yet to decide on the nature and scope of the inquiry.

“How and what kind of inquiry, we are yet to examine as we have been occupied with handling the situation. In the days to come, we will take a call,” he said.

On allegations of random arrests in the aftermath of the unrest, Sangma maintained that law enforcement agencies are acting independently and strictly in accordance with the law.

“The law has to take its course. The police will proceed based on evidence and as per legal provisions. It is not something I directly intervene in, as the investigation process is independent,” he stated.

He further said that the concerned Superintendent of Police and senior officers such as the DIG or IG would be in a better position to respond to queries regarding arrests and the ongoing investigation.
