Shillong, July 22: The Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) has sought more time to examine the demands raised by the Khun Ki Hajar of Hima Langrin, with the Executive Committee stating that it is not yet in a position to take a decision on the matter.

A delegation of the Khun Ki Hajar met the Chief Executive Member (CEM) and the Executive Member (EM) of the KHADC on Tuesday to press for action regarding their longstanding grievances.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, the delegation said the Executive Committee informed them that the matter could not be decided immediately as the case file is extensive and requires detailed examination before any action is taken.

The protesters said they have given the KHADC 15 days to review the issue and arrive at a decision. They warned that if the Council fails to respond within the stipulated period, they will return to the KHADC office and launch an indefinite hunger strike until a clear decision is made.

The Khun Ki Hajar of Hima Langrin have been demanding the removal of Paiem Nongtei Singh Syiem from the office of Syiem, alleging that he has violated democratic principles in the administration of the Hima and treated Hima land as the private property of his family.

They further alleged that the Syiem has denied residents who have attained the age of 18 the right to become members of the Dorbar Hima, which they claim is contrary to the democratic functioning and traditional governance of the Hima.

Maintaining that these grievances remain unresolved, the delegation said they will continue their agitation until the KHADC takes concrete action on their demands.
