Shillong, April 10: Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Friday clarified that the proposed Taj Hotels Resort and Spa will be developed within the existing Orchid property at Umiam Lake, addressing concerns over alleged development at Lumpongdeng Island.

Emphasising a balanced approach, the Chief Minister said the government’s tourism policy is guided by a holistic strategy that seeks to promote both high-end infrastructure and grassroots economic participation.

“The tourism strategy is a holistic strategy. This requires infrastructure to be created, hotels to be developed, including five-star properties, while also ensuring that our people benefit through homestays and small businesses,” he said.

Responding to concerns raised over Lumpongdeng Island, Sangma categorically stated that no permanent construction would be allowed on the island.

“As per the MoU, no permanent structures can come up in Lumpongdeng Island. It will only be used for activities involving temporary structures,” he clarified.

Highlighting the importance of inclusive growth, the Chief Minister stressed that tourism development must benefit local communities alongside large investors.

“We need five-star properties, but at the same time, we also need small restaurants and homestays so that local people can benefit,” he added.

Sangma further noted that Meghalaya currently runs one of the most aggressive homestay programmes in the region, with nearly 800 homestays already developed and an additional 3,000 targeted in the coming years.

Reassuring citizens, the Chief Minister said the government remains committed to maintaining a balance between economic growth and environmental protection.

“While concerns are being noted, I assure the citizens that we are working to strike a balance between development and environmental preservation, while ensuring that both luxury tourism and local livelihoods grow together,” he said.

He also called for public support in advancing the state’s long-term tourism vision, expressing hope that the clarification would help people better understand the government’s broader objectives.
