Shillong, April 29: The State Boxing Championship 2025-26 is set for a high-octane conclusion on Thursday at Mawlai Mawroh, following a day of intense semifinal bouts that showcased some of Meghalaya’s most promising young pugilists.

Organised by the Meghalaya Boxing Association with support from the Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs, the four-day championship features competitors in junior (15–16 years) and youth (17–18 years) categories, across multiple weight divisions.

Strong Showings in Junior Girls’ Categories

In the junior girls’ 42–44kg division, Isawanbiang Nongsiej of West Khasi Hills secured a win over Elizabeth Ngamlai of West Jaintia Hills, while Soyabanri Nongrang of Eastern West Khasi Hills edged past Elishiba Marwein of Ri-Bhoi in a closely fought split decision.

The 44–46kg category saw Anisha Kharbani of Eastern West Khasi Hills outclass Pdianghun Kurbah of East Khasi Hills. In another tightly contested bout, Nebadari Rympei of Ri-Bhoi emerged victorious over fellow district boxer Baiamonlang Lyngdoh.

In the 46–48kg division, Evangeline Sohbar of Ri-Bhoi and Aishisha M Mawroh of Noble Art Boxing Club registered convincing wins against Teresa Lamneikern of Rising Star Boxing Association and Dafeen L Mawlong of Eastern West Khasi Hills, respectively.

Junior Boys Deliver Competitive Bouts

The junior boys’ semifinals produced equally competitive matchups. In the 42–44kg category, Arush Biswa of Noble Art Boxing Club and Shaniaki Shabong of East Khasi Hills advanced to the finals.

Pyndapkupar Marwein of Eastern West Khasi Hills and Damonlang Marbaniang of Green Heart Boxing Club progressed in the 44–46kg division, while Freedy Marngar of East Khasi Hills and Karan Sunar of Ri-Bhoi booked their spots in the 46–48kg finals.

In the higher weight divisions, Ryan Lyngdoh of Green Heart Boxing Club and Iaimanbha J Nongrum of East Khasi Hills triumphed in the 50–52kg category. Arkimanbha Rimen of East Khasi Hills and Lewanki Pakma of West Jaintia Hills advanced in the 52–54kg division.

Alyn M Marak of West Garo Hills secured victory over Baskar Gill of Rising Star Boxing Association in the 54–57kg bout, while Chepyrkhat H Mitri of Green Heart Boxing Club defeated Moses Singh of Rising Star Boxing Association in the 57–60kg category.

Finals Promise High-Intensity Clashes

With titles on the line, the final day is expected to deliver thrilling contests as Meghalaya’s emerging boxing talents vie for top honours.

MLA for Mawlai, Brightstarwell Marbaniang, will attend the closing ceremony as chief guest, bringing the curtain down on four days of competitive boxing.

The championship underscores the growing strength of grassroots boxing in Meghalaya, with several young athletes demonstrating the potential to rise through the ranks in the sport.
