Shillong, April 30: The Superintendent of Police (SP) of Ri Bhoi District, Giri Prasad, has expressed deep appreciation and gratitude towards a group of Good Samaritans—particularly a school student—who played a crucial role in saving the life of a newborn baby allegedly buried alive by the mother in the Mawhati area.
Speaking to the media, the SP stated that words were insufficient to commend the young student and others involved in the rescue. “Even amidst fear and uncertainty, the student recognized the urgency of the situation and acted with remarkable courage to save the newborn,” he said.
He further announced that the Police Department will confer a special commendation on the student in recognition of his bravery and humanitarian spirit, which ultimately led to saving a life.
Referring to the viral video circulating on social media showing the infant buried in soil in Mawhati, the SP clarified that police swung into action immediately upon receiving information about the incident. “A thorough and rigorous investigation has been launched to ascertain the facts. Action will be taken as per the law against those found responsible,” he added.
The police have also urged the public not to merely circulate such sensitive content online, but to promptly inform authorities whenever they encounter incidents of this nature—whether confirmed or suspected—so that timely intervention can be ensured.
The incident underscores the importance of community vigilance and cooperation with law enforcement in safeguarding human life and maintaining peace and order.
