SHILLONG, OCT 19: The Shillong All Faiths Forum (SAFF) on Sunday expressed deep concern over alleged miscreant activities during Durga Puja celebrations in the state and appealed for peace and communal harmony.
In a statement, SAFF president Most Revd Dr Purely Lyngdoh said Meghalaya has always been an abode of peace where all faiths co-exist.
“Meghalaya has always been an abode of peace where all faiths and communities co-exist and celebrate each other’s festivals with mutual respect and brotherhood. Such acts by miscreants are a deliberate attempt to disturb the communal harmony and peaceful atmosphere of our state,” the forum said.
Strongly condemning the incidents, SAFF appealed to all citizens, irrespective of caste, creed and religion, to maintain peace, harmony and unity.
The forum also appealed to the State Government and District Administration to take immediate and strict action.
“We appeal to the State Government and District Administration to take immediate and strict action against the perpetrators and to ensure adequate security for the peaceful celebration of Durga Puja,” Lyngdoh said.
Urging the public not to fall for rumours, SAFF said, “We also urge the public not to believe in rumours and to extend full cooperation to the administration in maintaining law and order. Let us all together protect the secular fabric and spirit of Meghalaya.”
