SHILLONG, MAY 18: A delegation of the Federation of Licensed Exporters of Meghalaya, led by state BJP president Rikman G Momin, on Monday met Union Minister for Commerce and Industries Piyush Goyal in New Delhi to seek the Centre’s intervention in resolving export bottlenecks affecting trade between India and Bangladesh through Meghalaya.

According to a statement issued after the meeting, the delegation held detailed discussions with the Union Minister on a range of issues hindering international border trade through the state.

“The delegation held an in-depth discussion with the Minister on various issues that are impeding international border trade between India and Bangladesh through Meghalaya,” the statement said.

The Federation informed the Minister that exporters in Meghalaya have been facing several technical and administrative hurdles in recent months, affecting the smooth movement of goods and causing losses to the exporter community.

The body urged the Centre to step in and facilitate quicker resolution of export-related challenges that have emerged in the state.

Responding to the concerns, Goyal assured the delegation that the issues would be examined and addressed at the earliest.

“The Union Minister assured the delegates that he would look into the matter and ensure that ease of doing business is maintained and technical glitches coupled with administrative delays don’t lead to loss of revenue for Meghalaya’s exporter community,” the statement added.

It further stated that the Minister had directed the Joint Secretary of the Commerce and Industries Ministry to initiate a secretary-level Group of Ministers (GoM) meeting to resolve long-pending issues faced by exporters possessing the required legal permits.

The meeting comes amid growing concerns among traders and exporters over delays and procedural complications affecting cross-border trade routes linking Meghalaya and Bangladesh, a key market for several commodities exported from the region.
