SHILLONG, MAY 27: As part of its campaign to curb VIP culture, the Meghalaya government on Wednesday approved a standard format and eligibility list for name boards on official vehicles, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma said.

Sangma said the decision follows the government’s earlier SOP on sirens and lights.

“As you recalled that we have come out with SOP where we had mentioned about different siren, lights and other VIP culture that we are very concern about,” he said after chairing a cabinet meeting.

“The second notification was very simple notification, it was the regulation of the use of names or board of official vehicles,” he added.

Sangma said it was part of the government’s move against VIP culture.

Under the approved framework, the transport department has specified who can use name boards and the design to be followed.

“The transport department will define who will be allowed to use name board and not and based on that decision the transport department today had given the list of individuals, rather than position, who can use the name board and who not and what will be the format of the name board,” Sangma said. He said uniformity was key to the order.

“There has to be standard format as per designation which now will be use and that list was today approved,” he said.

The list covers a wide range of functionaries, the Chief Minister noted. “Basically, it is the list of different officials and different positions at the government level and judiciary and mostly in administration and certain statutory position from central government perspective,” he said.
