SHILLONG, SEPT 11: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Friday rolled out Maternal and Child Care Kits under Mission 1000 Days at Rongara in South Garo Hills, targeting 70,000 mothers who deliver in government hospitals every year.

Under the scheme, mothers delivering at public health institutions will get a kit with a bag, newborn clothes, blanket and baby-care products.

The kit also carries a letter from the Chief Minister urging parents to focus on care, nutrition, stimulation and nurturing in the formative years.

Speaking at the launch, Sangma said the initiative reflects government’s commitment to holistic development from conception to age three.

“The period from conception to three years is critical for a child’s physical, cognitive, emotional and social development. Mission 1000 Days adopts a life-cycle approach to early childhood development,” he said.

“Investment in children during earliest years is investment in future of Meghalaya. Every mother deserves care and every child deserves best possible start in life,” Sangma said.

He said the kit is more than essentials — it is a reminder to families to prioritise early childhood.

“Mission 1000 Days seeks to place early childhood development at centre of state’s efforts to build healthier and more capable generation,” he added.
