SHILLONG, JUN 5: Power Minister Metbah Lyngdoh on Friday said the state government will take steps to resolve problems faced by consumers under the Mawsynram sub-division due to issues with the MeECL franchisee, but is proceeding cautiously because the matter is sub judice.

Addressing the issue, Lyngdoh said the intent was to ensure better service delivery, but problems had cropped up in the process.

“See, the whole intention I like to mention is how the delivery mechanism is there in place, to ensure that better services are being provided to the people of the state. But in the process there are some problems which have come up, and we had a meeting with department and corporation as well and we address all the issues concern, address by different organization,” Lyngdoh told reporters.

He said the three local MLAs — Pius Marwein, Beyondstar Kurbah and Olan Sing Suin — had met him twice to flag consumer grievances.

“They have come and met me two times where they have address about the concern of the consumers that they are facing problems from time to time and with regards to billing, shutdown, overall services that is supposed to be provided to the consumers,” he said.

Lyngdoh noted that a decision was due months ago but was held up due to ongoing litigation.

“We were supposed to take decisions few months back but just because the matter is in the High Court, we have to be careful as far as any decision taken by the government because that should not be against the matter which is already been taken up in the High Court,” he said.

The minister added that Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma had since asked him to proceed. “But however, since we understand the gravity of the problems face by the consumers there, after I again met the chief minister addressing all the concerns where he had told me, you please look into the matter and go ahead, with whatever decision need to be taken, that is what he had entrusted to me,” Lyngdoh said.

“So, with that only, I had given direction to see that what action, steps can be taken from the department to see that the matter which is related to the Court should not be infringe from the corporation side,” he added.
