SHILLONG, JUL 16: The Meghalaya government will move a resolution in the Assembly opposing uranium mining in the state, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma said on Thursday.

In a video statement, Sangma reiterated that the NPP-led government is completely against uranium mining and will not allow any such project in Meghalaya.

He said the issue was discussed in detail during a meeting with senior NPP leaders on Wednesday.

“All the leaders of the NPP have suggested to me that the state government and the Assembly must unanimously come up with a resolution to oppose the mining of uranium in the state of Meghalaya,” the CM stated.

Sangma said the government is acting on that suggestion and will work towards passing the resolution to make its stand clear.

He cited concerns over the impact on people, environment and forests as key reasons for the opposition.

“There are too many risks involved. We are aware of the implications it could have on our people, on our environment, on our forests and on the future of our state. Hence, we are very firm that we will oppose uranium mining,” he said.

On the Centre’s position, Sangma referred to recent remarks by Union Minister of State Dr Jitendra Singh during his visit to Shillong.

“He clarified that the Government of India has not made any decision on that matter and is still examining it. No decision has been taken,” Sangma said.

The Chief Minister added that the proposed resolution will reaffirm the state’s commitment to protect Meghalaya from uranium mining and its potential consequences.
