Shillong, July 19: Meghalaya karatekas Daniel Dabiangbha Warjri and Gideon Tympuin brought laurels to the state after winning medals at the 10th Cadet, Junior, U-21 and Senior South Asian Karate Championship 2026 held in Dhaka, Bangladesh.

Daniel clinched the gold medal in the Boys’ Junior Individual Kumite (-68kg) category, while Gideon secured the bronze medal in the Men’s U-21 Individual Kata event.

The championship concluded on Saturday, with the All Meghalaya Karate-Do Association (AMKA) expressing delight over the achievements of the two athletes, describing the medals as another milestone in the association’s growing record of success at regional, national and international competitions.

Both karatekas earned their place in the Indian team following outstanding performances at national championships earlier this year.

Gideon won the gold medal for Meghalaya at the 5th KIO Senior & U-21 National Karate Championship 2026 held in New Delhi during February-March, while Daniel claimed silver in the Junior Individual Kumite (-68kg) category at the 5th KIO Sub-Junior, Cadet & Junior National Karate Championship 2026 in Dehradun in June.

Their success in Bangladesh continues Meghalaya’s impressive run at the South Asian Karate Championship.

Last year, Kynjailin Lyngdoh Mawnai won a bronze medal at the championship held in Colombo, Sri Lanka.

Earlier, in the 2019 edition of the championship held in Dhaka, Wandahunshisha Mawblei had captured a gold medal, further underlining Meghalaya’s growing stature in South Asian karate.
