SHILLONG, JUL 28: Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar has said Meghalaya has witnessed record development under the NPP-led MDA government, with the state budget tripling and central sanctions crossing Rs 42,000 crore in 8 years.

Speaking at a campaign rally for NPP Shillong Lok Sabha bypoll candidate Dr DRL Nonglait in Umdihar, Umsning, Ri Bhoi, Dhar said growth is visible across key sectors.

“Before 2018, road tenders of even a few hundred crores were unheard of. Today we have projects worth thousands of crores because the Centre has reposed faith in our government,” he said.

Dhar pointed to Union Minister Nitin Gadkari laying the foundation for a Rs 3,000 crore project and announcing Rs 39,000 crore more for the state. 

He added that 7-8 Union Ministers who visited Shillong recently for NE reviews said Meghalaya is among the best at utilizing central funds.

On finances, Dhar said the state budget has grown from around Rs 9,000 crore in 2018 to over Rs 30,000 crore now. 

“This is because the government is doing the work it is supposed to do,” he said.

He highlighted work beyond roads. 

In sports, Meghalaya will have the most artificial football turfs in India and a Rs 700 crore stadium is coming up at Mawkhanu. 

In tourism, annual allocation has risen from Rs 40-50 crore to thousands of crores. Homestays have increased from 500 to a target of 5,000 with subsidies.

Tourism contributes significantly, he noted, with 7,000-7,500 vehicles entering Shillong daily and estimated annual tourist spending of Rs 1,100 crore.

Dhar also backed the new pay structure for 23,000 teachers, calling it a “tough but necessary” step to address long-pending issues.

“We are focused on youth, health, education and tourism, not just roads. Meghalaya is moving in the right direction,” he said.
