Shillong, July 30: The Meghalaya Government is willing to engage in consultations to address public concerns surrounding the proposed Shillong Ropeway project, Tourism Minister Timothy D. Shira said on Thursday.

Responding to questions over the project, including allegations of tree felling, Shira said all necessary statutory approvals had already been obtained and noted that the project was initiated during the tenure of the previous Tourism Minister.

“That was not done during my time. I have been informed that everything has been done properly and all required permissions have been obtained from the concerned authorities,” the minister said.

Addressing demands for greater public consultation amid concerns over possible environmental impacts and water scarcity, Shira said the government is prepared to engage with stakeholders to clarify misconceptions and bridge the communication gap.

“Consultation will take place if there is anything. It is necessary to dispel apprehensions and the information gap. A bridge should be built with those who are criticizing that the government has not done things properly,” he said.

The minister further stated that the project had already received the required forest clearance and environmental approvals before the commencement of work.

“Departmental officers did whatever was necessary. Forest clearance has also been obtained, and an environment certificate has been issued. So what more is left, I don’t know,” Shira remarked.

The minister’s statement comes amid growing public debate over the Shillong Ropeway project, with some groups raising concerns about its potential environmental impact, including tree felling and possible effects on local water sources. The government, however, maintains that all mandatory clearances have been secured and has expressed its willingness to engage with stakeholders to address any remaining concerns.
