SHILLONG, AUG 30: The High Court Bar Association and Shillong Bar Association on Saturday met Governor C H Vijayashankar at Raj Bhavan and demanded removal of Advocate General Amit Kumar.

Senior advocate V K Jindal said the move followed the Chief Minister’s social media post defending the AG without hearing the Bar.

“We took a resolution to meet the Governor. Members of both executive committees and senior advocates met him at 10:30 am and submitted a memorandum,” Jindal said.

He said the Governor heard the delegation and assured to forward the memorandum to the government.

“He expressed his constitutional limitation but said the memorandum will be examined and forwarded to the Chief Minister with a request to place it before the Cabinet and to formulate SOP for appointment to the post of Advocate General,” Jindal said.

Bar Association Secretary General K C Gautam said the demand is not sub-judice as claimed by the Chief Minister.

“Our demand for removal is not sub-judice. The ball is in the court of the Chief Minister and his Cabinet. We submitted a resolution but he has done nothing,” Gautam said.

“We were surprised to hear the CM say the matter is sub-judice. More than 1000 lawyers took part in the rally. What is sub-judice in court is totally different,” he said, adding that all district bar associations support the demand.
