Shillong, September 1: Shillong Lajong FC continued their impressive start to the Shillong Premier League 2026 season with a 2–0 victory over Meghalaya Police at the SSA Stadium here on Tuesday.

Ricky Kharkongor and Lalmuansanga scored in either half to hand Lajong their fourth consecutive unbeaten game and inflict Meghalaya Police’s first defeat of the season.

Both teams had entered the match with two wins and a draw from their opening three games. However, Lajong’s pace and attacking movement proved too much for the police defence.

Lajong created the first opportunities, with Freddy Jyrwa and Lalmuansanga testing the Meghalaya Police goal inside the opening 10 minutes. Galbraith Laitmon then sent a free-kick narrowly over the crossbar before goalkeeper Eveningstar Bareh produced an excellent save with his outstretched boot to deny Lalmuansanga.

The breakthrough arrived in the 39th minute. Lalmuansanga, having moved to the left, delivered a cross into the box, where Ricky Kharkongor volleyed the ball home to give Lajong the lead. Ricky picked up an injury while scoring and was replaced at half-time.

Meghalaya Police struggled to create clear chances in the opening period, with Aldrin Ramsiej’s effort that went wide their best opportunity.

The police side had a chance to equalise early in the second half when they won a free-kick on the edge of the box, but Bikram Chettri sent his effort high into the stands.

Lajong doubled their advantage in the 54th minute following a defensive error. A misplaced back pass presented the ball to Lajong, allowing Lalmuansanga to race through, round the advancing Eveningstar and calmly guide the ball over the line.

Lalmuansanga had opportunities to complete a brace but was unable to convert either. He miscued a volley before later seeing his penalty saved by Eveningstar, who guessed correctly and dived sharply to his right after Bikram was penalised for a foul inside the box.

Lajong continued to threaten until the final whistle. Fridison Wanniang struck the crossbar with a powerful effort, while Meghalaya Police came close through Pynshailang L Lyngkhoi, who headed a Rapborlang Marwein free-kick over the bar.

The victory also maintained Lajong’s remarkable defensive record—they remain the only team yet to concede a goal in the SPL 2026.

With the win, Shillong Lajong became the first team to reach 10 points and moved to the top of the provisional standings. Meghalaya Police dropped from second to fourth, remaining on 7 points.

SPL 2026 Double-Header Tomorrow

The league will feature two matches on Wednesday.
