SHILLONG, SEPT 6: NPP candidate for Shillong Lok Sabha by-poll Dr DRL Nonglait on Saturday said West Khasi Hills has had an MP for only two years in its history, and NPP has honoured the region by fielding a candidate from here.
Speaking at Maweit under Mawshynrut constituency, Dr Nonglait said, “West Khasi Hills has never been able to produce a representative for long. We got an MP for only 2 years. When NPP called me, it remembered you, the people of West Khasi Hills. West Khasi Hills has a right and NPP is not partial.”
Appealing for a decisive mandate, he said, “If Bah Sniawbhalang says in Jaintia Hills Dr Nonglait will lead with a huge margin, in West Khasi Hills we must lead with an even bigger margin.”
Dr Nonglait said if elected, he will not discriminate.
“As President of KAS I work for Khasi, Pnar, Lyngam. In my seminars and books, I don’t work only for one party, I work for all. If you elect me as MP, I will work for all,” he said.
He said he joined NPP because it works on the ground.”I have laid a strong foundation and measured and weighed it before standing on this platform. Why am I with this party? Because this party does good work,” he said.
Listing works, he said, “We have CRD Block Shallang opened in 2022, at Nonglang also there is a block besides many schemes. The Nongstoin-Rambrai-Kyrshai road is now very good and it is this government that brought it.”He said the NPP-led MDA government took bold Assembly resolutions on Khasi language and ILP.
“We demanded the Eighth Schedule for many years, but it is the MDA government led by the NPP that took the resolution. Same for ILP and making Khasi an official language,” he said.
Highlighting his contribution as Director of the College Development Council, he said, “There was no medical college. Last year the government’s medical college was opened in Shillong, Shillong Engineering College was opened. Two more nursing colleges which never existed will come through the Council I head. This government brought the State University.”
He argued that an MP aligned with the state government is needed to bring central funds.
“Going to Parliament is not just sitting in the House. Sitting will not get you schemes. You have to follow up with different ministries. Files are prepared in the Secretariat after thorough study. For that you need Bah Sniawbhalang, Bah Prestone and the Chief Minister. If you want funds to follow up projects from Delhi, elect an MP who is with the government – your own Bah Rock,” he said.
