Shillong, Sep 16: United Democratic Party (UDP) president Metbah Lyngdoh on Wednesday hinted at possible action against West Shillong MLA Paul Lyngdoh over remarks that he described as being against the party.

Speaking to reporters, Metbah said the party had taken note of the statement and would discuss the matter before deciding on its next course of action.

“One of the MLAs of the party has given some statement which is very much against the party and we are taking note of it and we will sit and see what decision as a party we will take in due course of time,” he said.

The comments came after Paul Lyngdoh questioned the leadership of the UDP, referring to the departure of senior leaders including Bindo M Lanong, Jemino Mawthoh and Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit during Metbah’s tenure as party president.

Asked about the criticism of his leadership, Metbah said he would leave it to others to assess his performance rather than speak about himself.

He said that whatever responsibility was entrusted to him, whether as UDP president, an MLA or a minister, he had tried to discharge it with honesty and sincerity.

“Whether as a president of the party or whether as an MLA of my constituency, whether as a minister of the government, any kind of role and responsibility assigned to me, I will ensure that I perform and deliver to the expectation of those who have put in whatever capacity,” he said.

The exchange comes amid continuing uncertainty within the UDP, with reports of differences among its legislators and speculation over possible movement of some MLAs to other parties. Six of the party’s 12 MLAs had stayed away from its September 11 foundation-day programme, according to reports.
