SHILLONG, SEPT 28: The Assembly’s Estimates Committee on Monday took stock of Meghalaya’s preparedness to host the 27th National Games in Shillong in 2027, with just six months remaining for the event.

After a meeting with officials of the Sports and Youth Affairs department, committee chairman and Nongpoh MLA Mayralborn Syiem said the department briefed the panel on the overall preparation.

“We have reviewed the preparation for hosting the 27th National Games in Shillong in 2027. The Sports and Youth Affairs department has enlightened the committee about the preparedness,” Syiem said.

He said infrastructure is being developed across multiple venues in the state, including Shillong, Tura, Jowai and parts of East Khasi Hills and Ri-Bhoi district, where different disciplines will be held.

“Athletes have been prepared and infrastructure has been prepared in various locations. Preparation with regard to accommodation, transport and all logistics issues is a challenge, but we are very optimistic after the briefing,” he said.

Stating that six months remain, Syiem expressed confidence that all pending works will be completed on time.

The National Games will have 39 disciplines, with Meghalaya as the main host while other Northeastern states will host at least one discipline each.

“We are optimistic that our young boys and girls will get proper avenues. The Chief Minister and Sports Minister are very keen to ensure our athletes get proper diet, proper training and proper coaches from within and outside the country so that they can bring laurels to the state by winning medals in various disciplines,” Syiem added.
