Shillong, October 14: Shillong will host the 5th KIO North East Zone Karate Championship 2026 from October 22 to 24, with around 899 athletes, coaches, referees and team officials expected to participate in the three-day event.
Organised by the Karate India Organisation (KIO), hosted by the All Meghalaya Karate-Do Association (AMKA) and supported by the Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs, Government of Meghalaya, the championship will be held at the Convocation Hall of North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU), Shillong.
The championship will bring together karatekas from across the North East, providing a platform for young athletes to showcase their skills, discipline, competitive spirit and sportsmanship.
The event aims to promote karate in the region, encourage sporting excellence and provide athletes with valuable experience at the zonal level. It will also help participants assess their performance and prepare for higher-level competitions, including the 39th National Games, which Meghalaya is scheduled to host next year.
Karatekas from Meghalaya have achieved success at regional, national and international tournaments over the years. Top athletes from the state are expected to compete in the upcoming championship, hoping to deliver strong performances on home turf with the support of their families, friends and well-wishers.
