VPP slams Govt over delay in regular DGP appointment after UPSC's Reminder-II

SHILLONG, OCT 15: The Voice of the People Party (VPP) on Wednesday questioned the Meghalaya Government’s “repeated failure” to submit the proposal for appointment of a regular Director General of Police (DGP) to the UPSC, even after two reminders.

In a statement, VPP Spokesperson Dr A W Rani pointed to the UPSC’s letter dated September 24, 2026, which was marked as Reminder-II.

“The UPSC letter dated 24th September 2026, marked as Reminder-II, clearly shows that the Commission had written earlier to the State Government for convening the Empanelment Committee Meeting (ECM) for preparation of a panel for appointment to the post of DGP. But the requisite proposal is still awaited, prompting the UPSC to remind the State again to comply with the directions of the Hon’ble Supreme Court,” Dr Rani said.

Terming the delay unacceptable, he said, “This raises a fundamental question — why has the Meghalaya Government failed to take necessary steps despite repeated communications? Is it administrative inefficiency, lack of urgency, or some other reason? The people of Meghalaya deserve a clear and convincing explanation.”

The VPP said leadership of the state police cannot be left in limbo.

“The appointment of the head of the State Police concerns leadership, institutional accountability and effective functioning of law enforcement. It is a matter of considerable public importance and cannot be allowed to remain pending without satisfactory explanation, especially when the UPSC has flagged compliance with the Supreme Court’s directions,” Dr Rani said.

“The VPP demands that the Government clarify the reasons for the prolonged delay, disclose the present status of the proposal and explain what steps have been taken to ensure compliance with applicable legal and procedural requirements,” he added.
