Shillong, November 2: Washington N. Marak, an amateur golfer from Williamnagar in East Garo Hills, is aiming to represent Meghalaya at the 39th National Games after achieving a single-digit handicap.

Marak recently participated in the IIM Season 17 golf tournament in Shillong, describing the event as an important platform to showcase his abilities and represent his home district. He said his participation also highlighted the potential for golf to gain popularity in the Garo Hills region.

He claimed to be the first amateur golfer from East Garo Hills to participate in the tournament.

Marak acknowledged the support of former minister Marcuise N. Marak, the Tura Golfers Association and his coach, Johnwell G. Momin, crediting their encouragement and guidance for his progress.

His main ambition, he said, is to secure a place in Meghalaya’s contingent for the 39th National Games through consistent improvement and strong performances.

However, Marak also raised concerns over what he described as personal differences within Shillong’s golfing community, alleging that certain individuals had attempted to obstruct his progress. These allegations have not been independently verified.

He maintained that sporting opportunities should be determined by a player’s ability, discipline, integrity and commitment to fair play, rather than personal differences.

Marak also appealed to tournament organisers and disciplinary committees to examine any substantiated complaints regarding alleged rule violations in previous Shillong tournaments through a fair and transparent process. He stressed that rules should be applied equally to all participants to maintain the credibility of competitions.

Thanking his supporters across Garo Hills, Marak expressed hope that his journey would inspire more people from the region to take up golf and contribute to the growth of the sport in Meghalaya.
