Shillong, Jun 2: The People Democratic Front (PDF) has asked the state government to identify and relocate genuine harijans, who are working under its department, from Sweeper’s Lane in the city at the earliest.

This decision was taken during the meeting of the central working committee (CWC) of the PDF, which is also one of the coalition partners of the ruling MDA government on Saturday.

The CWC discussed about the prevailing law and order situation in the state capital.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, PDF Chairman Pynshngain N Syiem said, “We have decided to urge the state government to immediately identify the genuine harijans and accordingly relocate them from the area.”

He said that the party also maintained that other than the harijans, who are working in the different government departments, those people who have been “illegally” residing in the area should be evicted.

He also reminded that the state government in previous years had constructed housing facility to rehabilitate them.

Condemning the assault on the three local boys at the area, Syiem who is also KHADC chief said that this was not first incident as in the past too, many incidents had taken place.

On the other hand, the PDF leader said that the party would also ask the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) and the office of the Hima Mylliem to come up with necessary orders to relocate the harijans from the area.

According to him, the need relocate them is also in view of the fact that the Iewduh market is also facing a big problem of congestion and there is a need to expand the market.

Further, Syiem said that the KHADC would also immediately direct the Acting Syiem of Hima Mylliem to furnish details on the land that is being occupied by the harijans right from the British time and after Independence.
